There are a lot of banana plantations around us here on the west coast of Tenerife. In fact this one near us covers about the same acreage as the town we’re staying in!
‘Platano canarios’ are typically a bit smaller and more juicy than the ones from Latin America. They also take longer to grow because of the mild climate, up to 6 months, but are in season all year. We’ve been told they also ripen faster.
See all the green areas on this map? Most all of them are banana plantations!! (Plus a couple of golf courses.)
We see them all over when we drive, and looking at the satellite map view it’s easy to see why it feels like they’re everywhere! There are so many around, and they get even larger and more common as you go up the coast to the north.
